Nate's been having, well, let's just say some interesting behavior this week. Monday night was particularly rough. I realize there is a lot going on right now, but bad behavior can be exhausting for everyone. So on Tuesday afternoon when we got home from school, I was hoping the evening would go better, but instead the exorcist started rearing his ugly head again. After dealing with whatever the issue was, I told Nate that if something was frustrating him at school or at home that he should talk to us about it so that we could try to make it better...instead of having bad behavior. Oh my, reasoning with a 4-year old is so much fun.
Nate: Well, Mom, actually both of those things
Me: Okay, let's start with school.
Nate: Well, this little boy named M. at school keeps trying to talk to me when I'm trying to sleep.
Me: I can see how that would be frustrating, why don't you ask him nicely to let you sleep?
Nate: OK.
Me: Okay, now what is frustrating you at home?
Nate: Well, Mom, you know that dog across the street? [dead serious look] It really frustrates me when he barks all the time.
Me: [with a straight face] I can understand that. But the dog barking across the should not cause you to have bad behavior.
Nate: Okay Mom.
First, if you've ever talked to Nate for any length of time, you know he starts almost every sentence with WELL. And second, I managed to keep a straight face through the lack of correlation between bad behavior and dog barking explanation, but I may or may not have been in danger of peeing all over myself when I relayed the story to Scott.
Oh and by the way, after getting the whole dog barking thing off his chest, the rest of the night was extremely pleasant. Go figure.
